We-Ko-Pa’s Saguaro Course opens for public play

Fort McDowell, Ariz. – We-Ko-Pa Golf Club’s new Saguaro Course (pronounced sa· war· o) just opened for public play on December 16th and has already received it’s first national honor as Golf Magazine named it “The Best New Course You Can Play in the United States” in their January 2007 issue. The Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed Saguaro course is We-Ko-Pa’s second golf course to appear on Golf Magazine’s annual list of “Best New Courses” – the Club’s Cholla Course was noted as an honorable mention in March 2002.

Named after the iconic symbol of Arizona and the Sonoran Desert, the saguaro cactus, We-Ko-Pa’s Saguaro is a desert golf experience unlike any other in the state.  Saguaro is laid out much like the older more traditional courses, where greens are close to tees and the course follows the natural movement of the land.

Another distinguishing attribute of the Saguaro Course is that walking is encouraged during the cooler months. In fact, We-Ko-Pa offers the Sun Mountain Sports “Speed E” battery-powered, walk-behind carts for golfers wishing to walk.

Saguaro plays to a par 71 and stretches to 6,912 yards from the tips. The course features a unique mix of short and long par fours including the drivable 316-yard, par 4 second hole and the challenging 508-yard, par 4 18th.  Saguaro’s four par 3’s will also get your attention as they range from a short but challenging 137 yards to a stout 255 yards. From the tips, Saguaro has a course rating of 72.1 and a slope of 138.

Saguaro is the first daily-fee golf course to open in the Phoenix area in nearly two years and is the third Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed course in Arizona.

Open since December 2001, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club’s Cholla course is one of the most highly-acclaimed layouts to open in Arizona. Accolades include: Top Ten Best New Courses in the World, Sports Illustrated; 2002 Development of the Year, Golf Inc. Magazine; Best New Public Course, The Arizona Republic; Top 40 Daily Fee Golf Course in US, 2006 GOLF Magazine; one of the “50 Most Popular Golf Courses in the US” by the 2006-07 ZAGAT Survey.  We-Ko-Pa is owned by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and is managed by Scottsdale-based EF Golf and OB Sports.
