JGAA TO HOST 7TH ANNUAL QUINTERO CACTUS CUP
Team Match Play Format Features State’s Top Junior Golfers
PHOENIX, Arizona (April 23, 2007) – The opportunity to play a golf event within a team concept was inspired by the Junior Golf Association of Arizona in 2000 and further developed by the golf professionals at Quintero Golf and Country Club in Peoria. Later that year, the inaugural Quintero Cactus Cup was born and now, seven years later, the golf tournament features the top ranked boys and girls in the state of Arizona.
The 7th annual Quintero Cactus Cup will be played on April 28-29 at Quintero G&CC. There will be two mixed team matches comprised of 20 players, featuring better-ball and alternate shot during Saturday’s opening day of play and then singles matches will round out tournament action on Sunday. Morning rounds will get underway at 8:00 a.m.
“The Junior Golf Association of Arizona does a marvelous job each year in staging competitive events for our state’s top players and also provides an outstanding atmosphere of teaching the game to our beginners as well,” said Tom Wilcox, Director of Golf at Quintero Golf and Country Club.
Some of college’s current top players have teed it up in the Quintero Cactus Cup. Golfers like Duke’s Amanda Blumenhurst, Tim McKenney of the University of Florida, Chad Wilcox of Wake Forest and Georgia Southern’s Doug Smith. “It’s an ideal situation at Quintero Golf & Country Club as all of their members and golf staff have really embraced junior golf and this event in particular,” said Tom Cunningham, Executive Director of the JGAA. “We couldn’t have asked for a better partner with an event and as our past history indicates, our state’s best golfers play in this tournament each and every year and in most cases, go on to play at the Division 1 level in college.”
Some of this year’s key players include: Blake Brown, winner of last year’s prestigious SWSPGA Westfield Junior Championship and a member of the 2006 winning Quintero Cactus Cup team; Ashley McKenney, reigning 5A Division II High School Girls State Champion; Jin Song, 2006 JGAA Boys Player of the Year; Lauren Weaver, 2006 Mesa City Junior Championship winner and a member of last year’s winning Quintero Cactus Cup team; Andrew Augustiniak, winner of the PING Arizona Junior Match Play Championship and Cheyenne Woods, 5A Division 1 High School Girls State Champion in 2006.
